We started a new family tradition this year, celebrating German Saint Nicholas day. The eve of December 6th the boys set out their shoes, or rather their boots (the bigger size makes more space for more goodies), before they went to bed. Then, during the night "Saint Nicholas" comes and fills them with goodies if you're good and coal and sticks if you've been naughty. We thought it would be a fun way to learn and discuss who Saint Nicholas really was and put more of the real focus on baby Jesus Christmas morning.
Here is Daddy with a treasure map that went along with their shoes, leading to a bigger surprise. We had fun putting it together. It was one of my favorite things as a kid, treasure maps!
Benjamin was sweet to suggest that Liam use one of his other pair of boots since his feet were much bigger... that way Liam could get just as much stuff as him :) Here in Germany most kids get a few small toys, candy and fruit - usually oranges. Since our kids are more the Mandarin orange types, they got a few toys, chocolates and bananas.
Benjamin is really excited to see what was waiting for him! But he's waiting for his brother to be ready.
He came!
Figuring out the map...
Excited about their treats!
Liam got a cell phone and a stroller book. Benjamin got connectagons, markers and a puzzle.
It was extra special because Benjamin had been learning about Sankt Nikolaus in German kindergarten, where he actually stopped in for a visit and Benjamin and his friends got to hold his giant staff. It was fun to share this tradition with each other and our German friends.
